Vineyard Notes: Gandyhill (now Vallejo) Vineyard is a small (3 acre) vineyard planted in 2005 in southern Sacramento County, near the town of Wilton. Our first year working with this vineyard was 2008, when the Hills approached us to make wine for them. We liked the wine produced from this fruit so much that we have purchased the entire crop every year since. The field blend produced from this fruit -- called “Celeste” until 2014, then called “Elidé” -- has consistently been one of our best wines.
The vineyard is completely organic, with attention focused on vine health, irrigation methodology, hand-pruning and canopy management to produce the best fruit. The rows are too narrow for conventional equipment to navigate which means all vineyard operations are carried out by hand. Only aggressive pruning and judicious irrigation practices are implemented..
Cellar Notes: Approximately 7 tons of fruit was hand-harvested when the average brix of all 4 grape varieties hit 21.4 brix (Malbec already had hit 24). 1 ton of Malbec & 1 ton of Sangiovese were processed separately. Remaining fruit was destemmed to tank for a 96 hour cold maceration before fermentation was initiated. Pumped over thrice daily until dryness, then transferred to neutral oak for elevage.
Tasting Notes: A leaner version of this wine, the 2017 Elide has great clarity of flavor, with cranberry, cherry & eucalyptus being front & center. The palate resonates with a fruity licorice flavor that is enlivened by allspice & juniper berry on the finish.
