Vineyard Notes: Wilson Vineyards, Clarksburg. Outside of France’s Loire Valley, the Clarksburg AVA is one of the only locations where the Chenin Blanc grape shows true varietal character. These vineyards thrive in the Sacramento delta’s long hot summer days, nicely moderated by the surrounding mass of water, cool breezes from San Pablo Bay, and regular morning fogs, producing fruit that is consistently brightly acidic as well as full of fruit & mineral characteristics. The Wilson’s are 3rd generation farmers in Clarksburg, originally supplying sugar beets to the old sugar mill. They started planting grapes in the 1970s. Wilson Vineyard’s Block 20 is on Courtland Rd between Elk & Prospect Sloughs. The grapes were planted in 1994.
Cellar Notes: 4 tons of fruit was ready in the early morning. We foot-treaded all 8 bins & let the fruit & juice sit together for 4 hours before pressing the juice to tank for cold settling. The juice was then racked to barrel and stainless steel for fermentation. The barrels were then stirred & topped with the tank wine. In mid-October, all the wine was racked together & put back in barrel for final elevage prior to bottling.
Tasting Notes: A very aromatic nose leads with lemon zest, lemon verbena, jasmine & peach fuzz. The mineral component is layers of limestone & oyster shell. In the mouth it is zippy with acid, racing into the finish with apricot, river rocks & a hint of Chenin funk.
