Vineyard Notes: Cherryhouse Vineyard: Located on Lodi’s cooler western side, Cherryhouse Vineyard enjoys a moderate Mediterranean climate that receives the cooling delta breezes from the nearby San Francisco Bay. The area is known for its deep, fertile soils -- Tokay Sandy Loam which is extremely well-drained for an alluvial soil. Vines were planted in 1975 & are head-trained. Conventionally farmed, but with minimal synthetic inputs.
Walker Vineyard: The Walkers have been growing grapes in El Dorado County since the 1930’s. Their 220 acre property, sitting at 2100 ft of elevation, is planted to Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Barbera & Petite Sirah. The 2018 Zinfandel was sourced from their front vineyard, where the head-trained Zinfandel vines were planted in the 1990’s & are clones of the original plantings from the 30’s, grafted on St George rootstock. The vineyard soil is a coarse loam with lots of sand.
Cellar Notes: Both the Cherryhouse & Walker Vineyards produced good-looking fruit in 2019 & we made them in styles similar to previous years. Our Cherryhouse Vineyard fruit is destemmed to bins for fermentation and then pressed to neutral barrels for elevage. Our Walker Vineyard fruit is whole cluster foot tread to bins for native fermentation and then pressed to neutral barrels for elevage. After tasting each wine on their own we trialed a blend of two that was made up of 44% Cherryhouse (Lodi), and 56% Walker (El Dorado) and we're blown away by the results!
Tasting Notes: The blend definitely enhances the best characteristics of both wines while allowing the finished wine to be more than the sum of its parts. The nose is intense with candied cherry, watermelon, & plum fruits, mint, earth & bramble. It is smooth in the mouth, with bold fruits, mint, clove & slightly chewy tannins.
